How We Evaluate Condition
We look at visible imperfections and the card’s structural integrity.
Imperfections include:
Edgewear — whitening, chipping, worn edges
Surface wear — scratches, scuffs, loss of gloss
Corner wear — rounding, softness, whitening
Bends & warping — bends, small creases, curve from humidity
Indentations — small dents or impressions
Creases — shallow or deep, affecting structure
Stains / dirt / grime — smudges, residue, discoloration
Foil defects — scratches, micro-lines, peeling, bubbling
Structural damage — tears, splits, peeling layers, missing material
Manufacturing defects — miscuts, print dots, ink issues (case-by-case)
We grade the severity, frequency, and impact of these imperfections to determine the card’s final condition.
Condition Tiers
Below are the official XPcollect condition descriptions, aligned with hobby standards.
1. Near Mint (NM)
Definition:
Cards with almost no visible wear. They appear close to pack-fresh.
Acceptable imperfections:
Very slight edge or corner wear
A few tiny scratches or micro-scuffs
No clouding or major surface issues
Not acceptable in NM:
Creases
Bends
Large scratches
Whitening visible from arm’s length
XPcollect Notes:
These earn the highest payouts and should look very clean overall.
2. Lightly Played (LP)
Definition:
Cards with minor visible wear but no structural damage.
Acceptable imperfections:
Small edgewear or corner whitening
Minor surface scratches
Small scuffs
Slight loss of original gloss
Not acceptable in LP:
Noticeable bends or creases
Heavy scratching
Any structural damage
XPcollect Notes:
LP cards are common in collections and still receive strong offers.
3. Moderately Played (MP)
Definition:
Cards with obvious, noticeable wear but still structurally intact.
Acceptable imperfections:
Multiple scratches
Clear edgewear or corner wear
Small or moderate bends (that do not break fibers)
Minor creasing that does not compromise structure
Visible whitening on multiple edges
Not acceptable in MP:
Tears
Splitting
Peeling foil or card layers
Heavy stains or foreign substances
XPcollect Notes:
MP cards are acceptable but fall into a lower payout bracket.
4. Heavily Played (HP)
Definition:
Cards showing significant wear and multiple imperfections.
Acceptable imperfections:
Major surface wear
Deep scratches
Large bends
Noticeable creases
Heavy whitening on edges and corners
Not acceptable in HP:
Structural failure (splits, tears, peeling)
Water damage
Major staining or foreign substances
XPcollect Notes:
HP cards may still be bought but receive a much lower valuation.
5. Damaged (DMG)
Definition:
Cards with severe wear or structural issues that affect usability or integrity.
Qualifying problems:
Deep or multiple creases
Tears
Splits
Holes or punctures
Water damage or warping beyond normal play wear
Peeling laminate or foil
Significant staining, ink, or foreign substances
Heavy bending compromising structure
XPcollect Notes:
Damaged cards may still be accepted in bulk submissions, but payouts are significantly lower or may be declined depending on severity.
Additional Notes for Pokémon TCG Sellers
Because Pokémon-specific printing and foiling vary, here are clarifications:
Foil cards:
Foils show defects more easily. Light scratches still qualify as LP, but deeper scratches drop the card into MP or HP.
Warping from humidity:
Minor cupping is common in foils and does not automatically lower grade unless severe.
Vintage cards:
Older holo cards often have surface scratches from early-era sleeves. We grade these consistently with modern standards.
Manufacturing defects:
Miscuts, print dots, or mild off-centering do not automatically lower condition
Major defects that affect integrity (foil peeling, ink smears, laminate splits) push to Damaged
